This workshop is intended to fill the "tool boxes" of new or nearly new secondary school counselors with strategies, best practices, and effective counseling techniques so they will be able to guide students through the college admissions process. The workshop is designed to accelerate skill development and heighten knowledge regarding the world of college admissions. Some of the topics that will be reviewed include: how to create the ideal counseling office, what resources are essential to provide effective college counseling services, writing letters of recommendation, early decision and early action, standardized testing, how admissions decisions are made, mock admissions exercise, ethical issues in college counseling, legal issues in college counseling, the college essay, the use of technology, the value of public relations, creating a comprehensive secondary school profile, evening programs, communicating with your constituents, the relationship between high school counselors and college admissions counselors, powerful publications, the counseling department's web site, the common application, the value of summer enrichment programs, an overview of the financial aid process, the scholarship search, counseling the student-athlete, selecting a college, case studies, and professional development opportunities.
The workshop will focus on collaboration, professional growth, and in-depth consideration of current topics facing the counseling profession.
