For the 15th year Mr. Prutow will present the 2017 version of “Swimming with the Sharks”. He will offer a candid presentation on the intricacies of the ever-changing college admission playing field. The goal is to enhance counselor understanding of the complexities of the admission process. Fewer students are attending their top choice school; economic considerations are becoming a bigger factor in students’ college decisions; students are applying to more schools; alternative admissions options loom; testing is changing; and there isn’t a level playing field. The number of college-going students is larger than in the past; they experience more stress; face a longer timeline and look at admissions decisions as “Judgment Day”. Holistic reviews not only look for academic/extracurricular performance but also try to interpret a student’s personality and value to their communities. Sadly, rejected applicants may feel they have some personal deficiency. The college admissions process has become a competition. In an age where the first thing one does after opening an acceptance letter is hop onto Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to announce the news to the world, the admissions process is more dog-eat-dog than ever. In this cutthroat landscape it is tempting to question and qualify the decisions of admissions committees rather than understand the “game”. As the higher education landscape changes and student demographics shift, college counselors need to be cognizant of the fuel for reality counseling.
This seminar requires an additional fee and can be purchased during the registration process.
